Every day, somewhere in the world, Foreign Service community members are in the midst of moving. Some have moved a dozen times or more, and lived to tell about it! They tell their tales in this book, a collection of advice and stories to serve as your “companion” along the way. Topics covered include

• leaving the U.S. for an overseas post
• returning “home” to the Washington, D.C., area
• moving to other posts in the U.S.
• sorting and downsizing belongings before packout
• digitizing and backing up important household records
• creating a home inventory
• helping children of various ages deal with a move
• safely shipping pets
• packing for an ordered evacuation from an overseas post
• planning for an unaccompanied tour
• shopping for consumables for a hardship post
• special considerations for foreign-born spouses
• taking care of ourselves during a transfer
• and much more!

Personal stories, essays and entertaining anecdotes add to this collection, which was written, edited, and produced by and for the Foreign Service community.

Whether you are a veteran of many Foreign Service moves or a brand-new officer or family member preparing for your first packout, there is surely something in this book that you can use--or at that will at least give you a laugh when you most need one!

The Foreign Service Companion Moving Your Household Without Losing Your Mind eBook Kelly Bembry Midura Zoe Cabaniss Friloux Reviews

Moving is a fact of life in the US Foreign Service. Home to Washington, Washington to Dhaka, to Sydney, back to Washington, then to Jo'berg, La Paz, Lima, and on and on. In the Foreign Service, you get married, have kids, have loss, all in a constant kaleidoscope of change. And yet in the flush of joining the Foreign Service, the mechanics of moving and the effect of all this change can be underrated.

No more. This collection of essays written by dozens of US diplomats and their family members fills in the gaps left by the Department of State and the many other agencies of the Foreign Service in their official documents on how to move. It is written for those who are new to the FS and those with years of experience.

This book does not tell you who to contact about an issue, or how to read your orders. Rather, its essays are like having a series of coffee chats with more-experienced FS friends, while they tell you what they have learned in their FS moves.

The topics are broad. In addition to the more pedestrian topics (often delivered with a sense of humor), are essays on adjusting to living in new cultures, returning "Home," battling the burgeoning household while remaining sane, how (not) to plan a consumables shipment, "The Slacker's Guide to Moving," packing for an evacuation, being executor of a parent's estate from afar, and saying goodbye.

Though the primary market for this book is those in the Foreign Service, the book is also useful for others moving outside of their passport countries. Coverage includes on how to digitize one's records (thus avoiding having to ship hundreds of pounds of paper), moving your home business, and moving families and children of all ages, including the fuzzy kind.

Finally, the writing is just darn good. The editors assembled authors who are talented and entertaining. The applesauce story will have you giggling (you will have to read it to find out), and the story about little Hattie will leave you weepy.

This collection is sponsored by the AAFSW (Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide, the FS community organization), and the editors and authors are volunteers. Your purchase will benefit the programs of the AAFSW, in addition to helping with your move. This book is highly recommended, and apparently is the first of a series. I look forward to seeing the next volume.
Some great information for anyone thinking about joining the FS. A lot of whats found here is not found anywhere else or is really tough to get. Nice to have it all in one place.
One of the most interesting reads out there on FSO life and moving. Even if you are not interested in a career with State, it shows you a candid glimpse into the life of our foreign diplomats.
Some of the experiences do not apply to us. but still a fun read.
Good helpful information especially for first timers, but with great insights for those repeating the trails and tribulations of repeating the tiresome process!
This is a great guide for Foreign Service families. The stories are representative and informative. My daughter and I enjoy reading them for the entertainment value, having lived this lifestyle for more than two decades. If you are new to the diplomatic life and are preparing to move overseas, definitely get this book.
The firsthand anecdotes are fantastic and written by every type of personality - especially the not-so-perfectly-organized. Moving is madness in the most ideal circumstances. If you feel like the world is going to fall apart, the authors of these pieces are here to tell you, what works, what doesn't, and how you and your family will survive it all. The tone of the whole book is wonderfully set in the wise saying, "And this too shall pass." A must read...
This is a great book for anyone in the FS. I read it a whole year before I move and I have learned so much. Read it very quickly too.
